“Aging”- porcelain work

This work is made by stacking thin porcelain pieces that are made by sandwiching porcelain slurry between pieces of washi paper.
As the porcelain dries, and water evaporates, they shrink and harden and the shape appears.
Each “sandwich” curls and bends and sometimes cracks in a unique way.
These pieces are then fired at low temperature to retain their new shape. (This is called biscuit firing) The paper is completely burned away but the texture remains.
The pieces are then formed into stacks by adhering with glaze.
The stacks are then fired at a high temperature and given a silver glaze.

The silver glaze, is caused by a color change due to sunlight and a chemical reaction with oxygen. The color is whitish silver at the beginning but turns yellow little by little, and the hue deepens more time.
You can experience the joy of watching this work change color into something new.

-Aging-/
